Rudbeckia brings warm gold and russet tones to late-summer and fall arrangements. The distinctive dark cone center surrounded by daisy petals is instantly recognizable and wonderfully long-lasting in the vase. Annual types like R. hirta produce prolifically from seed in a single season.

Varieties

'Cherokee Sunset' produces fully double blooms in bronze, mahogany, and gold. 'Indian Summer' has enormous 6–9 inch single flowers. 'Sahara' offers unusual buff and rose tones. For classic black-eyed Susan simplicity, 'Goldsturm' (a perennial type) is reliable year after year.

Growing

Start seeds indoors 8 weeks before last frost or direct sow after frost. Rudbeckia is easygoing—full sun, average soil, and moderate water. Drought-tolerant once established. Pinch young plants for branching. Space 12–18 inches apart. They are relatively pest-free.

Harvesting

Cut when petals are fully open and the center cone is still tight. Harvest in morning, strip foliage, and condition in clean water. Vase life is excellent at 6–10 days.

In Arrangements

Rudbeckia is a natural companion for sunflowers, zinnias, and ornamental grasses in fall arrangements. The warm tones blend seamlessly with celosia and marigolds.
