Scabiosa (pincushion flower) produces dainty, domed blooms on long, wiry stems. The flower heads are covered with tiny stamens that give them the pincushion look. Annual types (S. atropurpurea) come in deep burgundy, lavender, pink, and white and bloom heavily; perennial types (S. caucasica) are available in blue and white.

Varieties

Annual 'Black Knight' has deep maroon blooms that approach black—unusual and prized. 'Fata Morgana' offers a yellow option. The 'Scoop' series provides strong stems in mixed colors. The dried seed pods are also decorative.

Growing

Start seeds 6 weeks before last frost and transplant after frost. Or direct sow after frost. Full sun, well-drained alkaline to neutral soil. Space 9–12 inches. Pinch for branching. Deadhead to keep blooms coming. Moderate fertility.

Harvesting and Vase Life

Cut when blooms are about three-quarters open. Harvest in morning. Vase life is 5–7 days with conditioning. The seed pods that form after blooming can be dried for use as a unique textural element.

In Arrangements

Scabiosa adds delicate texture and movement. Use with cosmos, nigella, and grasses in airy garden-style arrangements. 'Black Knight' adds a moody, sophisticated accent to any bouquet.
