Basil might seem like an unusual choice for flower arrangements, but its lush foliage and distinct scent have made it a favorite among growers who want to put every plant to double use. Ornamental varieties with dark purple or ruffled leaves are particularly attractive.

Varieties

'African Blue' is a vigorous, ornamental basil with purple-veined leaves and lavender flower spikes. 'Purple Ruffles' and 'Red Rubin' offer deep purple foliage. Even standard sweet basil provides lush green foliage with a wonderful scent. The flower spikes are attractive and useful too.

Growing

Plant after all danger of frost when soil is warm. Full sun, rich soil, consistent moisture. Space 12 inches apart. Pinch regularly to keep plants bushy and delay flowering (unless you want the flower spikes). See pinching guide.

Harvesting

Cut stems freely throughout the season. Condition in room-temperature water (cold water can blacken basil leaves). Vase life is 5–7 days; stems often root in water.

In Arrangements

Basil is a casual, fragrant foliage choice. Purple basil is stunning with zinnias, celosia, and marigolds in summer arrangements. Green basil pairs with cosmos and mint for an herb-garden bouquet.
